It's been great working with Alex and hard to believe he's already three months old. His mom was wanting some family pictures and some of Alex with his big brother so we combined a three month, teddy bear and family sessions all into one.

What a beautiful family!

This little guy was all about having his picture taken, and I loved it. He's three and that's another favorite age of mine.

This has been an insanely crazy busy week, so I only have two words to say today, "GO CATS!"

 

Tutus and Teddy Bears

I had the most fabulous session with Kendall last Saturday. It was time for her six-month session, which is hard to believe. I feel like I just finished doing her newborn session.

My idea for this session was to use the teddy bears but really dress her up. I mentioned to her mom that a tutu would be really cute, and she did not disappoint. She found this tutu and headband on Tutu Guru. I love the tutus that are super fluffy, and this one was just perfect. The pearls were the perfect accessory.

She may have been wondering just what she wearing in this one.

 

Then she decided she looked pretty darn cute!

 

Yeah, I am totally rocking this tutu!

 

I did a quick background change since I thought the hot pink would look great against the damask pattern.

 

 

Pink and green is one of my favorite color combinations for little girls. Her mom got this outfit at Lollipops and Gumdrops Boutique. I'm also excited because my friend Jenny who owns Savvy-Stitches is just starting to do embroidery too. You can check out her blog for more info.

 

We also managed to get her big sis in a pic too.

 

Joy

As Hayden was jumping around the living room this past Saturday, he said, "I don't know why, but I just have so much joy in me today."

I thought this was an incredibly sweet thing for him to say. It's one of those memories that I will keep tucked away and remember when he's a teenager.

I continued to watch him run and jump and play basketball on a little hoop that is hanging on the door in the hallway. I thought to myself that we should all experience such joy.

A couple of weeks ago, Hayden wanted to ride his new bicycle down the sidewalk. As we were halfway down the street, I knew I should've brought my camera. I started to go back to the house to get it but decided not to. I did have my phone with me, so I snapped a couple pictures with it. I didn't think it would be that good because it wasn't taken with one of my expensive cameras. But I was pleasantly surprised when I looked at it a little later. If I'd had the camera I use for sessions, I would've been worried about the settings, and I probably would've tried to pose him more. Instead, I just snapped the picture in the moment and was just enjoying watching him ride his new bike. I LOVE this little picture that I took with my phone. I have to say that when I look at it, the look of joy on his face fills me with such joy too. 

 

Little Ones

In the past few years, I have truly fallen in love with photographing newborns. I'm a little jealous of the photographers who do nothing but newborns, but I do love older children and seniors too, not to mention weddings.

It would probably seem that newborns might be the easiest to photograph, but that's not always the case. Sometimes these are the most time consuming sessions, and I usually allow at least two hours for a newborn session and sometimes longer. I really prefer that newborns be photographed in the first 10 days if at all possible. I know the last thing a new mom wants to do is get her little bundle of joy ready and pack up everything for a photo session. But it's in those first 10 days when newborns tend to sleep more and they can also be positioned more easily into all those precious poses with hats, booties and such. The good news is that if mom isn't ready to get out just yet, I'm happy to come to the house and take pictures there. Very little space is needed so I can almost always find good light in an area that will work just fine.

I think newborns are best photographed in just their diapers or completely naked. If the parents have a special outfit they want to use, that's totally fine too. Another favorite thing to do is simply wrap them in a cozy blanket.  

Another tip for photographing newborns, is to have mom feed him/her at the last possible moment. Moms are welcome to wait and feed them when they arrive at my house for a session or wait till I get to their's to start. Nine times out of ten, the little one is off to dreamland as soon as the tummy gets full.

I was lucky enough to photograph this little guy a couple weeks ago at his house. The living room had great morning light coming through the windows, and I brought along a few posing props and we were in business. He was wide awake for most of the session.

 

I love shots like this, and just look at all that hair!

 

 

This was one of my favorites. He was just so peaceful.

 

Playing the waiting game paid off, because he did fall asleep for just a few minutes. This is one of my favorite sleeping shots ever.

 

   

  

 

 

Spring Portraits

I'm always amazed, and also very grateful, when I start getting calls and e-mails in February from clients wanting to book spring portraits. After the winter we've had, I think everyone is more excited than ever for the arrival of warmer temperatures. I know I am! I really feel like my camera and I have been hibernating, and I'm definitely ready to get outside with some cute kiddos and beautiful families.

Spring sessions will start on April 1, weather permitting. I might even be able to start a little earlier if we end up having some super warm weather. Sessions will end on April 30. Just remember that Easter is April 24, so if you want your pictures back by then, you'll need to schedule your session sometime during the first two weeks of April. There is no session fee but a $75 deposit is required and will be put toward your final order. The special includes 1-8x10; 2-5x7s; 4-4x6s; and 8 wallets or you can purchase a CD with a copyright release of all of the images for $125. There is also a 10% discount on portraits 11x14 and larger, including canvas. I do ask that all orders be completed two weeks after the pictures are posted online.
